How to Measure the Effectiveness of Your Press Relations
Counting articles isn't enough
Ten short mentions in little-read outlets are often worth less than one in-depth article in the title your clients read. Measurement should reflect your objectives, not just volume.
Qualitative indicators
- Media relevance: is it read by your target audience?
- Key messages: do your messages come through?
- Brand prominence: main subject, quote, or passing mention?
- Spokesperson quoted: is your executive positioned as an expert?
Impact indicators
- Traffic to your website after publication
- Contact or meeting requests mentioning the article
- Links to your site, also useful for search rankings
- Sales teams reusing the articles
Useful monthly reporting
Good reporting is more than a list: it analyses what worked and what didn't, and suggests adjustments for the following month.
